Charlie Alston & Keisuke Tada
Winter Street Gallery is delighted to return to Paris with a two-person presentation of works by artists Charlie Alston and Keisuke Tada. On view from October 15 until November 9, 2024, the artists take a referential approach to art and popular culture, repurposing elements of the past and present to create bold and distinctive new images.
In eight works produced over the past year, Keisuke Tada adopts the style of classical landscape painting, complete with a fine pattern of cracks across the surface. Forming part of an ongoing series titled Paintings of incomplete remains, the peeling and loss of paint seem to tell the story of the paintings' passage through time. In his elegantly crafted works, Tada proposes a dialogue between surface and support, traditional subject matter and its contemporary materialization.
Referencing more recent source material, Charlie Alston’s compositions foreground printed and painted emblems of American popular culture and their linkages to broader global artifacts and symbols. Alston is deeply rooted in the legacy of modern media and magazines such as Jet and Ebony, which chronicled Black culture, emphasizing news and lifestyle coverage in the latter half of the twentieth century. Keenly attuned to modern art history, Alston collapses the hierarchy between abstraction and Pop Art, blending these movements with concurrent cultural references. Through their incisive mediation of their source material, Alston and Tada allow new forms of representation and cultural landscapes to emerge.
Keisuke Tada (b. 1990, Aichi, Japan) received a BFA and MFA in paintings at Aichi University of Arts and has exhibited widely across Asia. This marks his first gallery presentation in Europe. Charlie Alston (b. 1997, San Francisco, California) received his BFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 2019 and lives and works in Paris.
